Sleeping Dogs is on the way with Donnie Yen set to star

A movie based on Sleeping Dogs is on the way, and Donnie Yen is set to play the lead protagonist.

There really is not much information on it at the moment, not sure they’ve even found a director yet. All we really know is they have a writer and Donnie Yen will star. Going by his performance in XXX, the return of Xander Cage, he seems the perfect choice for the part of Wei Shen.

For those who’ve never played the game, players took on the role of Wei Shen, a former San Francisco police officer who was transferred to the Hong Kong Police Force. In an attempt to infiltrate and take down a criminal empire, they had to fight their way up the ranks, without blowing their cover. There were two types of missions in the game, those assigned to you by your police superintendent who you report back to and those assigned by your Triads lieutenant. This created a moral standpoint as your committing crimes trying to please the Triads heads as an undercover police officer. Released in August 2012, for Windows PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 Square Enix’s Hong Kong open world was an enjoyable mix of martial arts combat and mob drama. Developer United Front Games tried to get a sequel off the ground, and then a multiplayer follow-up, Triad Wars, before shutting down in 2016.

So, being another game adapted into a movie, is it going to bomb or get destroyed by the critics like the rest? Having a star like Donnie Yen onboard is definitely a step in the right direction and as long as Uwe Boll doesn’t direct, it could be in with a chance. The story of the game is certainly rich and intriguing enough to warrant a great martial arts movie. Yen already has mutiple projects on the go including Ip Man 4 and the Live action Mulan.

Not all game to movie adaptions are bad. I kind of liked Mortal Kombat and I might get slated for this but I kind of liked Doom as well. If you just look at it as a horror and don’t get all fanboyed up because it’s not exactly the same as the game it’s not too bad.
Weather Sleeping Dogs gets panned or bombs, here’s one person who’s going to watch it either way.
