I know what you are thinking, blasphemy right and rightly so. I am thinking the same thing. What would Bruce Lee think? Of all the movies they shouldn’t touch in my opinion, Enter the Dragon has to near the top. It would be like trying to remake The Godfather. All cult classics should be left well alone as reboots are never as good as the original. I can count on one hand the amount that has surpassed their originals. Point Break, nope, Total Recall, nope, Ghostbusters anyone?
Warner Brothers have been racking their brains how to recreate the magic of the original and David Leitch of Deadpool 2 and John Wick fame has signed up to direct. Is it a coincidence it’s announced the anniversary month on his death? I smell and flop in the making.
The Enter the Dragon reboot has previously been linked with Brett Ratner and Spike Lee. It’s not going to happen anytime soon as Leitch still has to make The Fast and Furious spin-off, Hobbs and Shaw first. So casting is way-way off but who could they possibly get to fill the part of Bruce Lee or even Bolo Yeung?
After Lee’s death and with the success of Enter the Dragon, martial arts were introduced to the masses. Karate schools opened up all across the US. Hundreds of Bruce Lee what I like to call Impersonators came out of the woodwork. Starring in martial arts movies trying to cash in on his success. None of them had anything close to his screen presence and magnetism.
So, the question is Do we really want this? Are people especially martial arts fans like myself interested in a remake of one of the most cult films of all time?
I mean they are remaking The Crow (which I’d also rather they didn’t) so why not Enter the Dragon? Maybe Leitch and whoever plays Bruce will knock it out of the park. I personally think that it could be the greatest martial arts movie of all time but will still get slated because it’s a remake and as we’ve discovered in the past, fans don’t like their childhood films messed with.
Only time will tell.
