Starring Seo In-Guk, Dong-Yoon Jang and Jung So-Ming in Project Wolf Hunting. Prisoners aboard a transportation ship take over the ship only to be confronted by something more sinister lurking in the bowls.

The booming Korean horror movie market is in full swing once again with Project Wolf Hunting. I’m not quite sure why it’s called that as I don’t recall it being mentioned once in the movie. I could be mistaken.

Project Wolf Hunting starts with a busload of male and female prisoners arriving and being put onto a prison ship. And we are talking about the worst kind of convicts, mass murderers and homicidal maniacs. Most are gang-related. Seo In-Guk as Park Jong-doo looks particularly sinister. Covered in tattoos looks every bit like the Psycho he portrays.

Once loaded onto the ship, it’s not long before it goes all Con Air, the prisoners escape their cages and take over the ship killing every guard, policeman and worker that gets in their way, usually in a gruesome fashion. There are heads getting caved in, guards knifed in the gut, neck, and head with buckets of blood spraying everywhere. Unfortunately, there’s no Nick Cage prisoner with a heart of gold fighting on the police’s behalf.

There is Lee Do-il (Dong-Yoon Jang) who seems to reluctantly and quietly goes along with it. Park who seems to know Lee is a bit wary of him and warns him to stay out of his way.

There is a doctor on board who is making mysterious visits to the bowls of the ship. What we find down there is near enough to a modern Frankenstein’s laboratory with a sedated man in a tank that has an oxygen mask on and his eyes are stapled shut. The doctor is trying to keep him sedated but this doesn’t work.

So of course the Frankenstein man wakes and starts killing all in his path in a brutal fashion, cop and inmate alike. His eyes being stapled shut makes no difference as he sees in infrared Predator vision. We later find out he’s a genetically engineered experiment all the way from world war 2, making him a pensioner even though he’s still young looking. The Japanese were experimenting on POWs to extend life. They succeeded and he no longer ages, unfortunately, the side effect made him 5 times stronger than the average male human, immune to pain and has enhanced healing. The gruesome experiments caused him such pain, he completely lost his mind and now kills all in his path.

While the genetically engineered inmate is rampaging through the ship. A small group of police officers are trying to survive. Lee, an older prisoner who wanted no part in the escape and the doctor join the group. Together they are still trying to hold off what’s left of the inmates while trying to avoid the experiment who you can hear coming a mile away as he thumps his way down corridors with the heaviest footsteps I ever heard. It kind of reminded me of the remake of Resident Evil 2 as you hear Mr X thumping about in the room above.

The action and gore are completely over the top. The inmates show zero remorse for who they kill. It can be quite satisfactory seeing them coming up against the experiment and dispatched in a brutal fashion. And I mean brutal. One inmate gets his arm ripped off and is then beaten to death with it.

In conclusion Project Wolf Hunting can be described as Con Air meets Frankenstein’s monster. It’s a complete gore-fest with lots of action. Most of the characters you care little about. There are some little contradictions as it’s mentioned the experiment only kills people that pose a threat yet it has no problem killing a defenceless woman chained to the wall. In fact, it made a bee-line for her before anyone else that were legit threats.

In my own opinion, it needed a few martial arts in there. How awesome would it have been to the experiment helicopter kick someone’s head off?
